Elizabeth Warren Open to Supporting Trump’s Labor Secretary Nominee Lori Chavez-DeRemer

Senator Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., has indicated that she might support Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer, R-Ore., for the role of labor secretary in the incoming Trump administration, signaling a rare moment of bipartisanship on labor issues.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Warren stated that if Chavez-DeRemer, who has co-sponsored major pro-union legislation, commits to strengthening labor unions and boosting worker power as labor secretary, she would be a "strong candidate" for the position.

Chavez-DeRemer was one of the few Republican lawmakers to support the Protecting the Right to Organize Act, a comprehensive pro-union bill aimed at expanding labor protections and ensuring workers' ability to organize and negotiate collectively. Warren described this as a significant move for a Republican to back such a measure, particularly one who might lead the Department of Labor under Trump’s second term.

Warren also framed Chavez-DeRemer's nomination as an early test for Trump's administration. “This will be a critical moment for President Trump: will he stand with workers, or will he yield to his corporate donors and the opposition of the Republican establishment?” Warren questioned. "If Republican Senators block the nominee for supporting unions, it will expose their empty rhetoric about supporting workers."

This statement from Warren follows a similar gesture of engagement from Senator Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., who recently debated with billionaire Elon Musk on government spending issues. Musk, who is part of an initiative co-led by Vivek Ramaswamy to create the Department of government efficiency in Trump’s administration, advocates for reducing wasteful government spending, particularly within the Pentagon.

Rep. Jared Moskowitz, D-Fla., also announced on Tuesday that he would be joining a new Department of Government Efficiency caucus in Congress. He stated that cutting wasteful government spending and improving efficiency should be a bipartisan priority.
